One Project,

Three Parts.

A Deeper Channel

Dredging the Coos Bay Federal Navigation Channel will allow for the passage of larger container ships, ensuring optimal efficiency.

  • The Coos Bay Federal Navigation Channel modifications will allow for the channel to accommodate Neopanamax vessels (container ships with a capacity up to 13,000 TEUs). This involves deepening the channel to -45 feet mean lower low water (MLLW), which necessitates widening the channel to 450 feet. Currently, the channel has an average depth of -37 feet MLLW, and an average width of 300 feet. Beyond allowing the passage of larger vessels for the container terminal, these modifications will increase the margin of safety for ships of all sizes which make use of the channel.

A New Container Terminal

Construction a new intermodal terminal, setting the sustainable standard by including state-of-the-art electric equipment, and served exclusively by rail.

  • The PCIP is designed to minimize its environmental footprint, using equipment powered by electricity generated from green sources, cold ironing for berthed ships to reduce pollution, and reliance upon rail (rather than truck) to move goods from the terminal to its destination. The terminal is expected to have a capacity of 2 million TEUs of container cargo per year (servicing both imports and exports).

An Upgraded Railroad

The Coos Bay Rail Line (CBRL) will undergo comprehensive upgrades and rehabilitation, increasing its speed, safety, and capacity.

  • Upgrades to the CBRL will support the significant increase in freight traffic, while enhancing railroad safety for rail crews and residents of Coos, Douglas, and Lane counties. The CBRL upgrades will include track replacement, bridge rehabilitation, tunnel heightening, and siding extensions. The Union Pacific's Eugene rail yard will be improved with the installation of interchange tracks, ensuring a seamless connection to the Class I national rail network.

PCIP Project Area

A modern, safe, and efficient multimodal transportation system that will transform Southwestern Oregon.

The container terminal will be on the North Spit of Coos County, OR, with rail upgrades along the CBRL taking place in Coos, Douglas, and Lane counties.
