A state-of-the-art terminal, powered by rail

We’re planning a new international shipping container terminal on the North Spit of Coos Bay.

The Pacific Coast Intermodal Port (PCIP) project would create the first ship-to-rail facility on the U.S. West Coast, just 6 miles from open ocean.

We’re planning this port with new solutions in mind. Trains, not trucks, would move the containers, and port terminal facilities would be powered by electric motors instead of diesel.

This project would bring thousands of permanent jobs to Oregon’s south coast and boost the area’s economy for decades to come.

During construction, the project would create about 2,600 temporary jobs. And once completed, the new container terminal would directly employ about 2,500 people permanently.

Increased shipping capacity

The new terminal would offer expanded shipping capacity and efficiency, supporting international trade. With berths for two ships, the terminal would handle 1.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) initially, around 800,000 containers, with capacity of up to 2 million TEU anually.

New opportunities

The project could also create nearly 7,000 indirect jobs between Coos Bay and Eugene as new industries and businesses arrive.

Shorter trade routes

The ocean voyage from East Asian ports to Coos Bay would be shorter than the existing routes to other West Coast ports. This decrease could mean faster, cheaper shipping and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Community reinvestment

These new jobs and opportunities would increase the region's tax revenue, which would be reinvested into the community through schools and other county and city services. Estimates show the project would generate nearly $50 million for the state annually via income taxes from the new jobs.
